Seven Magic Mountains without Instagrammers

Seven Magic Mountains without Instagrammers

Laugh all you want, it’s getting harder and harder to go out and take photos of places and things without being obstructed by those “doing it for the ‘gram.” To that end, I have pretty much given up on sunsets and now primarily aim for sunrises as my golden hour of choice (see also my trip to the Anza Borrego Serpent). One thing that has often bought my eye (hat tip to Monty Python), on the road to Las Vegas, is of course, Seven Magic Mountains, plunked down in the Nevada desert just outside of Vegas itself, by the artist Ugo Rondinone.

The Making of Harry Potter

The Making of Harry Potter

Back in 2015, I made the impulsive decision to travel to England for a day to visit Banksy’s Dismaland art exhibit (for a future post…), but my entry was timed, so I opted for an evening visit. This meant I had time to kill prior to heading out to Weston Super-Mare and the Tropicana to be bemused. Fortunately, a little giant thing was on the way: The Making of Harry Potter at the Warner Brothers Studios in Leavesden.

The Mysterious Island at Tokyo DisneySea

The Mysterious Island at Tokyo DisneySea The Nautilus Submarine from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea at Tokyo DisneySea

This post is the first in a series that I’ll roll out over time related to my trip to Japan in 2013. I opted to start with The Mysterious Island, one of several lands that make up the gobsmackingly amazing theme park that is Tokyo DisneySea. Mysterious Island gets first billing as it is centered around a topic near and dear to my heart: the classic Disney movie 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

The Ferrari Museum, Maranello Italy

The Ferrari Museum, Maranello Italy

Not too long ago, I decided to visit Italy, and being a car nut, I had to stop at as many car museums as I possibly could which, with national holidays I had not foreseen, meant only one: The Ferrari Museum (aka La Museo Ferrari). What I also had not foreseen, was that the factory museum for one of the most famous and storied marques in the history of motorsport, would have a series of rotting and vandalized fiberglass body shells displayed out in front.

“Classy…” said no one ever.

The Last Jurassic Park Ford Explorer

The Last Jurassic Park Ford Explorer

It’s not uncommon for theme parks that leverage movie properties to create replicas of items to put in theme parks. Often artifacts from summer blockbusters and tentpole films are too intrinsically valuable to a franchise to sacrifice to the wear and tear of theme park display, however this Jurassic Park Ford Explorer bucks that trend.
